Pennsylvania State University
Located in the center of State College, the Pennsylvania State University (often called Penn State or PSU) campus known as "University Park" is a major facet of Nittany Valley. With 34,000 undergraduate students and 6,000 graduate students, its students form a major part of the population of the region. The post office and campus box offices comprise their own zip code and municipality named University Park. The administration is led out of Old Main by President Graham Spanier.
Founded in 1855 as Farmer's High School (a name intended to appease locals worried about the effect a college would have on the area), the university became a land grant college in 1863 and a formal University under President Milton Stover Eisenhower in 1953 and is now among the top ten largest public schools in the country. The various colleges offer over 160 majors, and the University has a $1.2 billion endowment. The university joined the Big Ten Conference in 1990, and joined the Big Ten Football Conference shortly thereafter in 1993.
There are 21 locations across Pennsylvania (with over 80,000 students), but the local location is the University Park campus. It is one of the most selective in the state with an acceptance rate of only 58%. The demographic makeup of the students is 75% from the state of Pennsylvania and 54% male. Only 11.6% of the student population are minorities and about 8% are international students. The average student faculty ratio is 17:1.
