Encouraging residents of the county to read about the "human condition and issues of community", Centre County Reads is basically an open book club for the county. Sponsored by Barnes and Noble, Centre Daily Times, Schlow Library, Centre County Library and a handful of the local school districts, they periodically hold fundraisers. Their 2006 fundraiser is on October 26th, held at the State College Barnes and Noble.
They also hold various events in the community relating to the book that is currently on the reading list. For instance, for Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, there was an event at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with free hiking supplies, Appalachian Trail hiking panels, geocaching demonstrations and more.
